An IV and An I Do

I was filming a wedding in Lexington Kentucky in April of 2006. Katie, the bride was stunning . Although you couldn't tell by her looks that morning she was actually not feeling well. After talking with her briefly as I continued to film her preparing for this big day I learned that just hours before I arrived she had been released from the hospital. She spent the entire night at the ER in Lexington terribly ill. When asked how she was feeling , she replied much better. The day continued on in a typical manner similar to? many of the weddings I have shot. She continued to consume plenty of fluids and ate lightly mostly fruit.

It's show time now and I am on one knee, camera on my shoulder and ready to record at the head of the aisle awaiting the Grandparents to proceed down the aisle. I receive an awkward tap on my shoulder followed by a whisper in my ear-it's the wedding planner and she tells me the bride requested that I go across the street to get some shots of her. This was highly unusual considering it was WEDDING TIME, the church was full prelude music was over and the grandparents are waiting to be told to proceed down the aisle. I asked the wedding planner "right now???" she replied with a yes. So I did. As I crossed the street many things were going thru my head as to why she might make such a request at this point when we are so close to her making her grand entrance.

When I entered the building across the street what I found was Katie on a couch with three or four blankets on her and was shaking fiercely. Her soon to be husband was by her side. One of the groomsmen (a Doctor) had ran to the ER and picked up an IV of fluids. Another groomsman was holding the IV bag while standing on a chair, the other groomsmen (the Doctor) put on his rubber gloves and proceeded to inject the bride with the IV fluids. They also gave her some powerful medicine with a warning that if this wedding was to happen it must happen quickly before the meds kick in, because she wouldn't be able to stand or talk right.

Well the wedding was 15 minutes or so late but she made it down the aisle with Dad. The priest did a condensed service and quickly got to the I do's, "Now presenting for the first time", and she walked out of the church with her new husband. It was great footage to film and I was so glad I had bride that had a great sense of humor and wanted this crazy moment captured .
