An Indonesian Wedding

We first laid eyes on each other at the Finna Golf & Country Club Resort in West Java, Indonesia. I was working there as Associate Marketing Manager and Tony was in Indonesia on a 3 months contract, working at the JW Marriott. Two weeks before Tony’s contract was due to finish, he decided to play a round the golf at the Finna Golf & Country Club Resort, which takes nearly 2 hours to reach. Upon arriving in the lobby area, I walked past and our eyes meet for a mere second. To cut a long story short, after a few dinners, we both knew we had found something special. Like all stories, timing was everything. As we only first saw each other for around 10 seconds, we could have easily missed each other and never had known that the other existed. Tony returned to NZ. After many emails and phone calls I decided to visit him and his family in NZ. During my stay, I knew that he was the one for me. I resigned my position in Finna Golf & Country Club Resort and spent the next 8 months in Middle East as Tony had another contract in that region. Upon our return back to NZ, we got engaged. Our wedding here in New Zealand was more of a renewal of vowels as we were first married in Indonesia in September 25th 2005. The Indonesian wedding was in front of 3,000 people and spread over 3 days as there are many traditional ceremonies that need to take place. Tony did not know exactly what he was walking into but handled it all very well. With regards to our N.Z, It was a perfect day with perfect weather. We couldn’t have wished for anything better. We arrived by helicopter into the Westpac Stadium, where the ceremony took place on the playing field with the guests seating in the stands. After the ceremony we left by helicopter for our bridal party photo session at Kelburn (A suburb which overlooks the fantastic harbour and city of Wellington) Photos as a husband & wife, together with our full bridal party led to an hour of relaxing fun while overlooking the city views. Tony’s passion about martial art gave us an idea for more fun photos using some of his weapons. Background music (personally chosen and made by us) took place through out most of the afternoon. During the formal part of the afternoon we had some friends (Betty-Anne Monga from the well known NZ band Ardijah along with Peter Tuitama from the Gold Coast performing 2 songs each which were dedicated to us. Tony also got up and sung a Sumbawaness (an Indonesia dialect from my hometown of Sumbawa) song, which made me and most of the Indonesians present cry. At the back of the Room we had placed a big screen which was constantly showing the DVD of our Wedding ceremony from Indonesia, allowing our guests who weren’t able to attend, to enjoy the sights and atmosphere. An Area in a room directly above our reception room was decorated in more of an Indonesia flavor where we laid out different photo albums from our Indonesian Wedding for all to view. Later in the evening, our friend Peter Tuitama carried on performing and by popular demand, carried on through till Midnight. With guests from Capri (Italy), Indonesia, England, Australia and naturally throughout New Zealand, this wedding lasted 14 hours. Prior to the wedding we had decided that we would delay our honeymoon to take on a project to raise money for a musician friend of ours that recently had an accident and is now in a wheelchair. We spent the following 4 months organizing a 2 show event which saw NZ’s top bands, comedians and Sportspersons including Tana Umaga giving their talents for free. People joke with us as yet we have not been on a honeymoon. I guess our passion of helping others is why we get on so well.
