Convertible Takes The Plunge

Dear Party Pop, I have a funny story to share about my honeymoon. My husband and I are older and not particularly fond of flying, so we decided to drive through the wine country of Northern California for a week of good food and drink. As a wedding gift, our children rented us a convertible for the trip and encouraged us to let loose a little. I think they thought the wind blowing through our hair would make us feel young again. It was working until the car suddenly stopped going. We were on a little two-lane road when for no apparent reason the car turned off. We were able to pull over to the side out of harms way and Jim took a look under the hood. Everything looked good to him and we tried starting the car again. No luck so we called for help. Help arrived in no time and got the car started. It was some minor electrical thing. We were off again with the wind on our faces. This joyous feeling didn’t last long though. The car again sputtered and stopped and again we pulled over. We phoned for assistance and waited. This time, however a beautiful lake lay in the near distance and we decided to take advantage of it. We found a boulder shaded by trees and sat together hand in hand to admire the scenery. The same electrical problem was the culprit but we were assured it was now taken care of. Cruising down the highway, take three. We finally reached a winery and enjoyed some wine tasting and food. On our way to another recommended establishment the convertible decided it was tired once again. I’ve never heard Jim curse like he did as we pulled over one more time. But this time was a little different. This time we didn’t have any cell phone reception. I burst out laughing. It was all I could do to keep from crying. Luckily, my laugh is contagious and soon Jim and I were both cracking up. What a honeymoon. Thanks kids. The surroundings were beautiful, however, and we decided to take a walk to see if we could get reception somewhere else. It was getting late and there were not a lot of cars on the road so we’d have to go quick. Soon the sun would be down and we didn’t want to be stranded in the dark. It didn’t take long to get a signal and help was once again on its way. This time they said it was the battery and a charge was all we needed. The air was now crisp so we put the roof up as we made our way to the hotel. A good night sleep would make us forget our troublesome day. I could go on and on but I won’t. Let’s just say our convertible turned out be quite a lemon. But the kicker came when we once again had to pull to the side of the road. We were on a bit of a cliff without a lot of room to spare. We got out of the car, laughing and laughing at our predicament, and took in the breathtaking view. Just as Jim was about to call for help a huge truck passed us, just nicking the back end of our rental. The car was pushed forward and took a nose-dive over the cliff. Our mouths hung open and then we laughed so hard we had tears in our eyes. We were fine and we were going to get a new rental car! The rest of the honeymoon was perfect. Sincerely, Claire Cooper
