Spring Break

I met my husband in Belize when I was on Spring break. I went there with two of my friends from college. I had never been to the Caribbean and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. I had taken some scuba diving classes to get my certification. I heard that Belize is one of the best places to scuba dive so I wanted to check it out.

My friends and I went to Caracol which is located on the western slopes of the Maya mountains. The drive out there was incredible. We actually had to hire a tour guide because the roadways to get there are in bad shape. It was worth it though because we had a chance to learn things that we wouldn’t have known touring around by ourselves. We saw the largest pyramid which is called ‘Canaa’ or Sky Palace. It is the tallest man made structure in Belize standing at 143 feet high. Caracol is also in the rain forest and there was plenty of flora and fauna to enhance the beauty. We also visited Lamanai and Xuantunich but I won’t get more into that.

On the third day, we decided to do some scuba diving along the Lighthouse Reef. That is where the Blue Hole is. The Blue Hole is a circular cave system that formed during the Ice age and collapsed when the sea levels rose 3-400 feet. The hole is more than 400 feet deep and 1000 feet across. I can’t even begin to describe the colorful marine life, reefs and huge stalactites we saw. We even saw a hammerhead shark. They must be used to people, cause he left us alone. Thank God.

I swam around a large cluster of plant life and swam right into a guy that was on the other side. He was checking out the plants in detail and was kind of shocked when I slammed into him. I could tell behind the mask that he was quite good looking and seemed to be alone. I didn’t see any Signs of a girl friend anywhere. It wasn’t a favourable environment to talk, so we found a way to tell each other we’d meet at the surface in an hour. This was exciting. He was cute.

I hooked up with my girlfriends. I didn’t tell them yet about my escapades. I figured that could wait until we surfaced. I wasn’t really sure what I would find when we actually spoke so I thought I would feel it out first. We swam around for another hour and then we decided to surface. There were two Boats on the surface. I asked our driver to move closer to the other Boat. The mystery guy looked like he was with two of his friends as well. How convenient. I introduced myself and apologized for smacking into him. He was laughing about it. We told our friends what happened beneath the surface. They thought it was a great way to meet someone.

They happened to be staying in Caye Caulker as well. We decided to meet for Dinner and drinks later. It would be fun to party with some guys. The other guys were pretty good looking too. My friends commented on that. They were both single too. It just so happened that Susan thought one of the guys was cute and Pam was attracted to the other one. This could be an interesting night.

We hooked up at the Rasta Pasta Rainforest Cafe. We ate pasta and seafood and drank Cocktails for the next three hours. We were all having a great time, laughing and talking. It was a very strange phenomenon that the six of us coupled up so compatibly. The chemistry between the 3 couples was amazing. What were the chances? We all decided to split up for a couple hours and meet at the Oceanside Bar at 11:00.

Kurt and I decided to go for a walk along the beach. We were so attracted to each other that within 20 minutes of being alone, we were kissing extremely passionately. He was making my knees weak. I have never enjoyed kissing anyone like this before. I felt safe and cared about and we barely knew each other. We agreed that we would hold off on the physical pleasure we knew we would experience until we had a few days to get to know each other. It was going to be tough, but I wanted it to be perfect and special. We both could tell that this might go somewhere but we wanted to be sure. It was definitely a ‘love at first sight’ moment. I think a woman can tell if she has just met the man she was going to marry. I knew it but I didn’t want to scare Kurt. We had so much in common.

We hooked up with the others as planned and it was amazing to watch the Dynamics play out. It was as though we all found our perfect partners at the same time. The story goes on and on but the clincher of the story is that we all got married in a triple ceremony a year later. It was a very elaborate event since there were three families to pay for it and three families to attend. We had six hundred people attend the reception. It was a good thing that we had three of us to do the planning. It’s a great story to tell when people ask how we met. I love him very much.

Thank you,
Diane Louis
